The Best Camping Spots in Texas

Updated: May 26, 2020

Looking for a place to go enjoy your summer vacation in Texas? Here are my three favorite spots in all of Texas! Two of them having camping fees and one is free.

Quintana Beach (Bryan Beach)

Bryan Beach, Freeport, TX 77541

Quintana Beach is great if you’re looking for a budget option! Bryan Beach is open to the public for free camping. There aren’t many amenities other than the beach. But a short drive to a local conscience stores should handle any restroom needs for a short beach camping weekend.

Located about an hour and a half from downtown Houston, this beach is easy to access. You’ll find plenty of spots to fish and swim. Bryan Beach isn’t quite as crowded as some of the other beaches closer to Galveston because it is located near refineries. But the seclusion is part of it’s charm. Some days, you’ll have the beach to yourself!

Make sure to pack plenty of tent stakes because it can get pretty windy on the beach!

Some other beach camping essentials:

Galveston Island State Park

Galveston Island State Park is one of the most gorgeous places I have ever visited. Gorgeous views, super close to the beach, fishing spots on site, and the best bathrooms I’ve ever seen while camping.

HOT water in all the showers. Need I say more? Also the lighting made for some bomb selfies!

If you’re into wildlife, the birding opportunities are incredible. Look at this shot I took of a very friendly bird that came up to us while we were fishing.

The staff were super nice, the camping location included fire pit and picnic table, and I am sure I could go on and on about this place.

Unfortunately, the beach side is still under construction but it really is only a short drive to other places that are open to the public.

Krause Springs

There are not many waterfalls in Texas but Krause Springs has one of the most beautiful ones and you can swim underneath it! They have a natural springs area that you can swim after a small hike down some rocks or you could stop by the pool fed by the natural springs.

Their butterfly garden is one of the most relaxing places on the whole campus. Wind chimes, water features, and hammocks create a serene place for an afternoon picnic or nap.

Located about an hour out of Austin, it's convenient for Austin dwellers and not too far of a trek from Houston, San Antonio, or Dallas.

Most people think about Krause in the Spring and Summer for their swimming activities but I love visiting in October because the fall colors shouldn't be missed! Check out the beautiful yellow leaves in the Pinterest image below. Bring some firewood and gather around a campfire with your loved ones.
